Academic

Progress
.

At HeadG online school UK, academic success is focused on the progress of the individual with high expectations of excellence for all pupils. Recognizing that pupils are motivated, inspired, driven and challenged in different ways lies at the heart of the academic program.

Our pupils are encouraged to become passionate about their subjects, to study beyond what is examined and to gain a true understanding of their subjects' place in the world. As pupils enter the Third Form the focus of their study turns more to preparation for the GCSE program. Core subjects continue as normal, but pupils are provided with their first opportunity to make some choices – giving these subjects more teaching time and thus preparing pupils more effectively for the increased rigor of the GCSE program. There is a wide range of GCSE subjects available for pupils to select and flexibility in the School timetable ensures option combinations are numerous, allowing for a personalized set of GCSE qualifications.

Small class sizes are maintained throughout the School and the outstanding teaching staff are much more than subject specialists, they are recruited for their drive, enthusiasm and skills beyond the classroom.

Monitoring and Reporting
.

The School has a rigorous process for monitoring and tracking progress. A range of externally set assessments are used to establish baseline expectations against which departments subsequently chart progress. The School also has a rigorous screening process for early identification of any concerns in reading comprehension and speed, with bespoke programmes in place to ensure progress is maintained.

At GCSE and A Level, pupils are set minimum target grades based on these assessments. Over the course of the year, each year group will have at least one Progress Review Evening at which parents and pupils meet with each subject teacher to discuss progress made and identify targets for development. In addition, parents will receive written reports which provide information relating to pupil attainment as well as their attitude to learning. It is well documented that excellent pupil progress is best achieved through open dialogue between all those involved in the learning process – the pupil, the School and the family.

As such, we encourage dialogue and expect parents to take an active interest in their child’s life at school.

Learning Development
.

The primary objective of all teachers at HeadG online school is to provide an environment that enables all pupils to make academic progress. In order to facilitate this, there is a strong emphasis on teaching pupils about the skills required to help them take ownership of their learning.

A bespoke ‘Learning Skills’ programme is embedded within the First Form curriculum, and all subjects provide pupils with the opportunity to practice these skills in their specific context. There is also a rigorous screening process to assess various aspects of a pupil’s cognitive processing. These results are analysed carefully, and suitable interventions devised.

In some cases, these interventions may be small group programmes; for others, it may be 1:1 lessons with an expert teacher. In all cases, the emphasis is on providing pupils with the tools they need to excel, both in school and beyond.

Mindset for Learning

At HeadG we want all of our pupils to leave us having cultivated habits and attitudes that are positive, productive and beneficial for life, enabling them to face difficulty and uncertainty calmly, confidently and creatively. Our ambition is to help our pupils become better, more effective learners, curious about the world around them and prepared to take intellectual risks in order to develop their understanding of it.

Whilst at HeadG pupils undertake a Mindset for Learning programme which adapts to keep pace with their changing academic environment.

The programme initially centres on pupils becoming self-aware of their own learning mindset and developing an understanding that intelligence is not fixed but can be affected through focused effort.

As attentions turn to external examinations pupils learn the importance of setting goals so that challenges can be broken down into manageable targets; they are introduced to research based approaches to effective revision and are encouraged through challenging tasks within lessons to develop resilience in the face of problems.

The programme teaches pupils how to collaborate effectively, how to communicate meaningfully, how to work independently without distraction and how to solve problems without fear of failure.

Sixth Form Entry

As pupils progress through the Senior School they mature from adolescents to young adults and thoughts become focused on plans for the future. The expectation is that pupil’s progress to HeadG Sixth Form to study A Levels and this continuity offers many benefits. In particular, pupils receive personal guidance on making the right subject choices from staff who are familiar with their individual strengths and ambitions.

Entry to the Sixth Form is based on individual subject entry requirements which are discussed at the Sixth Form options evening held in November and are also included in the Options Brochure.
